What is Bitrate
Today we are going to teach you how to know the bitrate of a video that you have on your computer in order to know what quality you have that you want to reproduce. First, we’ll explain briefly what exactly the bitrate is, and then we’ll show you how to know it in Windows 10 and MacOS.
There are several factors that can determine the image quality of a digital video . Two of them are the resolution and the final format, and a third is a bitrate. That means that if the bitrate is bad the video will be distorted or jerks for much resolution you have, while if it is good it will look in more detail and quality.
What is the bitrate of a digital video
The bitrate of a video is the flow or rate of data, or what is the same, the amount of information that your computer plays per second. Therefore, the higher the data flow per second the more quality you will have. This stream is measured in kilobytes per second, meaning that the more kbps the better the video quality .
In fact, we can say that the bitrate can be more determinant than the resolution when it comes to measuring the quality of a video. It’s no good if the video is viewed in 4K if you do not reproduce enough data to fill that space with enough information to make everything look detailed.
In practice, that means a video with FullHD resolution at 1920 × 1080 and 300 kbps will look much worse than a VCD from 352×288 to 1150 kbps. That’s why, if you ever feel that a video looks bad check the bitrate is a way to know if it is the video itself.
How to know the bitrate of a video in Windows 10
The only thing you have to do to consult the bitrate of a video in Windows 10 is to right click on the file on which you want to know this information. You will be presented with a popup menu, in which you must click on the Properties option to access the menu where you will find what you are looking for.
Total Bit Rate
Once you open the menu, you will see several tabs at the top. Click on the Details tab to display all data related to the video you are playing. Between the data, you will have the Total Bit Rate , which is the overall bitrate of the video. Throughout the video, the bitrate can vary, and hence the total is the most appropriate measure to get an idea of the quality.
How to know the bitrate of a video in macOS
In macOS, the process is a bit more complex but just as simple. The only difference is that you first have to run the video on a player before you can view your information. To do this, right click on the video and choose the option Open with , choosing to open it with QuickTime . The video will start to play.
Once you are playing the video, press the Command + I key combination, which will show you the information about the video you are watching. The bitrate data will have you as Data Speed and remember that the higher the quality the video will have.
Keep in mind that while Windows 10 shows the bitrate in kbps macOS will show it in Mbps. One megabyte is a thousand kilobytes, so you have this in mind when making the conversion and interpret the results that appear to you.
