How To Use and configure Windows Update in Windows 10

Windows Update Windows 10 serves to keep up with updates of all kinds. Many are important or even critical. They affect the security or stability of your PC. Others are also useful and improve Windows in several ways.

Configure Windows Update in a basic way

  1. Note: Disable the automatic updates of Windows 10 . Or read on to configure them by keeping them activated.
  1. Click on the Windows Start menu and choose Settings .
  2. In the window that opens click on Update and security .
  3. Choose Windows Update on the left .
  4. Click below to the right in the Advanced Options link .
  5. These are some customizable configurations:
    • Choosing how updates should be installed
Below is a drop-down list with two options:

-If you choose Automatic . Windows will reboot the PC on its own when necessary to finish installing the updates that are. In theory when you are not using the equipment.
-If you decide to notify to schedule a restart . You can tell Windows when it’s okay for you to restart if necessary.

    • Offer updates for other Microsoft products when you update Windows
For example, Microsoft Office or other Microsoft programs. In general it is advisable to leave this box enabled. This way you will also receive updates on security, stability and improvement of these other applications.
    • Delaying updates
It does not install non-critical Windows updates at the moment. For example of new functions. They will be installed only after more or less time. In general it is convenient to leave it DISABLED.
  1. Close the configuration window when you finish. The changes are saved alone. Keep reading…

Advanced configurations

They have to do with alternative ways of getting updates. Until now, they were always downloaded to your PC from Microsoft servers exclusively. In Windows 10 you can choose to also download from other computers or sources other than Microsoft itself.

To activate or deactivate the alternative download of updates:

  1. Enter again the advanced options of Windows Update following the steps from 2 to 5 above.
  2. In the new screen click on the link Choose the way you want the updates delivered .
  3. Then there are two possibilities:
    • To deactivate the alternative download
Click the blue button above to check “Off”.
    • To enable the alternative download
The button above must be “On” (click on it if it is not). Choose below if you want to allow updates to be downloaded only from computers in your local network (it’s a safer option). Or from your local network and also from computers connected to the Internet even if they do not belong to your network (it is less secure but it gives more download options).
  4. Close the window when you finish.

Check the updates manually

  1. Follow steps 2 through 4 above to enter Windows Update.
  1. Check for new patches by clicking on the button Check for updates . You will see a list of those that exist. By default all are installed automatically without you having to do anything.

Configuring Windows 10 updates can give you more control over the way they are downloaded and installed on your PC. Allow to change if you want the default option. For example to make Windows warn you and ask for confirmation before installing them.

Set how Windows is updated

It is an alternative to completely  disable Windows 10 updates . Follow that link if that is what you want to do.

The following steps are valid only for Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise. They do NOT work in Windows 10 Home. To know which version you have click with the RIGHT button in  Start  and choose  System .

  1. Click the RIGHT button in the Windows Start menu   and select  Run . In the window with that name, type  gpedit.msc  (and press the OK button  ).
  2. The “Local Group Policy Editor” opens. Go to the left in  Computer Configuration ->  Administrative Templates ->  Windows Components ->  Windows Update .
  3. Double-click on the right to  Configure Automatic Updates .
  4. Choose the option Enabled above on the left  . You have four options in the drop-down list below (see the image above):
    • Notify download and notify installation
It is the best option in general. Windows informs you when there are updates available. Only download and install them if you tell them by hand when you warn them about it.
    • Automatically download and notify installation It
causes Windows to download and install without notifying you of any updates. It’s the default option.
    • Download automatically and schedule the installation
Windows downloads the updates on your own but installs when you say. If you choose this option you have to indicate below the day and time you want them to be installed.
    • Allow the local administrator to choose the option
In theory, you can choose any of the above options in Windows Update in the Control Panel. But in practice it may not work.
  5. Press the OK button below   after choosing the option you prefer from the four. Close the policy editor.
  6. Click on the RIGHT button in the Windows Start menu   and choose  Execute . Write the services.msc command in the window   (and press  OK ).
  7. Find the Windows Update service on the right   and double-click on it.
  8. Its properties are opened. Click on the “Start type” drop-down list. Check that it is set to  Automatic  or  Manual . Choose one or another option if they are not already. Also only in that case, press the Apply button   and then the  Start button . Confirm with  OK  and close the window.

Four important things

  • The change in the configuration of the updates can take a while. Sometimes it is done almost instantly, sometimes after a restart or after hours or even days. Or sometimes you need to check for updates manually so Windows really starts using the new settings.
  • No configuration allows you to choose which specific updates to download and which ones do not. At most you can select when you want to download all of them (with the options to notify download and installation or to program the installation).
  • Updating manually can make updates installed automatically and automatically even if you have chosen a different configuration.
